But dummy load bank testing is much more than that, and one of the most important reasons to perform it has to do with wet heap issues caused by light loads. Light duty refers to the practice of running a generator at less than its possible maximum output capacity. Since each generator has an optimal working load versus fuel consumption sweet spot, light loads can lead to reduced efficiency and can lead to a build-up of unburned fuel in the engine exhaust. This potentially dangerous buildup is known as wet buildup. Wet stacking reduces the generator's maximum power output, increases its emissions, makes the generator a fire hazard, and requires more maintenance than a healthy generator.

In addition to simply ensuring that the generator can operate as specified, a dummy load bank test also helps prevent wet stacking. When operating at maximum power output, the temperature and pressure within the engine can rise to levels that cannot be reached when operating at lighter loads. These extremes help burn off the fuel and soot deposits that build up in the engine exhaust plenum due to light loads, effectively healing light-load damaged generators.
